Background of the study
This study assesses the performance of interpreters engaged in Yoruba–English translation in Ibadan media, a critical factor in the effective dissemination of information in a bilingual society. Media outlets in Ibadan rely heavily on interpreters to bridge language gaps during live broadcasts, interviews, and news reporting, ensuring that both Yoruba and English speaking audiences receive accurate information (Adewale, 2023). The study examines interpreter performance by analyzing live media segments, recorded interviews, and through feedback from media professionals. It evaluates factors such as accuracy, fluency, and the ability to capture cultural nuances in translation. Additionally, the research investigates the training and support systems available to interpreters, and how these influence their performance. The study adopts a mixed-methods approach that includes qualitative content analysis and quantitative surveys. The findings are expected to provide insights into the strengths and weaknesses of current interpreting practices in Ibadan media, and to offer recommendations for professional development and improved translation standards that will enhance media communication in a multilingual context (Adewale, 2023).
Statement of the problem
Despite the essential role of interpreters in Yoruba–English media translation, performance issues persist that affect the clarity and accuracy of information broadcast in Ibadan. Inconsistencies in interpreter proficiency, challenges in managing rapid dialogue, and difficulties in capturing cultural nuances have been observed, leading to misinterpretation and audience confusion (Adewale, 2023). The lack of formalized training and quality control mechanisms further exacerbates these issues, compromising the reliability of media translations. This study aims to identify the specific performance challenges faced by interpreters and to evaluate the effectiveness of current support systems, with the goal of proposing measures to enhance overall translation quality in the media.
Objectives of the study:
To assess the performance of interpreters in Yoruba–English translation in media.
To identify factors affecting interpreter performance.
To recommend strategies for improving interpreting practices.
Research questions:
What is the current performance level of interpreters in Yoruba–English media translation?
What factors influence the accuracy and fluency of interpretations?
How can interpreter training and support be enhanced?
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it evaluates interpreters’ performance in Yoruba–English media translation, providing critical insights that can inform improvements in media communication. The recommendations derived from the study will assist media organizations, interpreter training programs, and policymakers in developing strategies that enhance translation accuracy and audience engagement in Ibadan (Adewale, 2023).
Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to assessing interpreters’ performance in Yoruba–English translation in Ibadan media, focusing on live broadcasts, interviews, and related media content.
Definitions of terms:
Interpreting performance: The effectiveness and accuracy with which interpreters convey messages between languages.
Media translation: The process of translating content for broadcast or publication in media outlets.
